A SafeWork NSW White Card Course is required to be able to enter a construction site. This applies to workers whose employment causes them to routinely enter operational construction zones — including tradespeople, traffic controllers, cleaners and machine operators. It is also a requirement to submit for an owner builder permit with your local council.

Upon successful completion of the online White Card course you will be issued with a SafeWork NSW Statement of Training which you can use that same day, as well as a Nationally Recognised Statement of Attainment.

Need a White Card for construction work in NSW? You can complete your entire course online today — no classrooms, no waiting, and you're certified the same day.

SafeWork NSW Requirements For Online White Card Training

SafeWork NSW allows General Construction Induction Training (CPCWHS1001) to be delivered online only when it is run as a supervised 'Virtual Connected Classroom'. That means a live, two-way video session with an accredited trainer who can see and hear every student, verify identity in real time, run practical demonstrations and assess responses on the spot. A self-paced slideshow with an unsupervised multiple-choice quiz does not meet the standard, and a card issued that way can be rejected by a site supervisor or cancelled by the regulator.

Our NSW course is built specifically around those rules. Classes are capped so the trainer can interact with each student, your 100 points of ID is checked on camera at the start of the session, and your PPE (hi-vis, hard hat, eye and hearing protection) is sighted during the practical components. Training is delivered under The Careers Academy, RTO 46244, holder of SafeWork Approval Number 800603, so the Statement of Training you receive is issued by an approved provider.

You can confirm the unit itself on the national register at training.gov.au, and SafeWork NSW publishes its current White Card rules — including how to check whether a provider is approved — on its own website. Both links are provided further down this page.

Inside The 6-Hour Live Zoom Class — Hour By Hour

The NSW session runs for approximately six hours including breaks. The first block covers the WHS Act 2011 (NSW) and WHS Regulation 2017, the roles of PCBUs, workers and site supervisors, and the duty of care you personally carry the moment you step on site.

The middle blocks are the practical heart of the course: identifying hazards common on NSW sites — falls from height, powered mobile plant, electricity, asbestos in older Sydney housing stock, silica dust from cutting engineered stone and concrete — then applying the hierarchy of control to each one. You'll work through Safe Work Method Statements (SWMS), toolbox talks, signage, and the emergency and incident-reporting steps your employer will expect you to know on day one.

The final block covers PPE selection and fitting, fire extinguisher types and use, and your written and verbal assessment. Your trainer marks the assessment during the session, so you leave the class knowing you have passed — there is no waiting days for a result.

How Your NSW Card Is Issued And How Long It Takes

On the day you complete the class we issue your SafeWork NSW Statement of Training. This document is legally sufficient to start work immediately, and most NSW builders and labour hire agencies will accept a photo or PDF of it while you wait for the plastic card.

Your Nationally Recognised Statement of Attainment for CPCWHS1001 is issued alongside it. The physical SafeWork NSW White Card is then produced and sent by registered post — typically within two to four weeks, depending on Australia Post and regulator processing times. Keep the Statement of Training with you until the card arrives, then carry the card on site at all times.

If your card is lost or damaged later, SafeWork NSW can reissue it — you do not have to repeat the training, because CPCWHS1001 does not expire.

Who Needs A White Card In New South Wales

The requirement is broader than most people expect. Carpenters, concreters, electricians, plumbers, riggers, scaffolders and labourers obviously need one, but so do traffic controllers working within a construction zone, site cleaners, delivery drivers who leave their vehicle inside the site boundary, surveyors, engineers, project managers and safety inspectors.

Owner builders in NSW also need General Construction Induction Training before submitting an owner-builder permit application to their local council, alongside the NSW owner-builder course. Apprentices and school-based trainees are usually required to hold a card before their first placement, and many labour hire firms will not add you to their books without one.

Because the qualification is national, your NSW card is accepted on sites in Queensland, Victoria, South Australia, Tasmania and the Northern Territory. ACT workers should read that state page, as the card issuance process differs there.

White Card Training NSW — Accepted Everywhere

White Card Training NSW certification works across all states and territories. Get certified here, work anywhere in Australia. Construction companies, mining sites, demolition crews — they all accept the same White Card.

Your certification doesn't expire, but many employers want you to refresh your knowledge every few years. Some sites require additional safety training on top of your White Card, depending on the specific work.

Keep your White Card with you on site. Supervisors check them regularly, and working without one means immediate removal from the site — plus potential fines.

Construction Safety Training — Real Skills For Real Sites

Construction Safety Training goes beyond just getting your card. You learn how to move around active sites without putting yourself or others at risk. Where to walk, where not to walk. How to stay visible to machinery operators. What to do during emergencies.

The course covers common accidents and how they happen — trip hazards, falling objects, vehicle movements, electrical risks. You see why safety rules exist instead of just memorising a list.

When you start your first construction job, this training makes the difference between feeling lost and knowing what to expect.

White Card Certification NSW takes a few hours of your time, costs less than a tank of fuel, and opens up every construction job in the state. Whether you're starting as a labourer, apprenticing in a trade, or moving into site management, this certification is step one.
