"Two topics generate the most real conversation in NSW sessions: plant movement and asbestos. On plant — the near-misses that kept me up at night as a foreman were almost always plant-related. Workers walking into exclusion zones, assuming the operator could see them. An excavator has massive blind spots. A reversing truck has almost no rear visibility. I tell every student: if you cannot see the operator's eyes, the operator cannot see you. Do not move near operating plant until you have made eye contact. On asbestos — NSW has enormous pre-1990 building stock in Western Sydney, the Inner West, and along the coast. If you suspect asbestos, stop work, do not disturb it, and call a licensed asbestos assessor. That is not optional."

The NSW White Card requirement applies broadly. The following roles all require a valid White Card before accessing any NSW construction site:

No — your NSW White Card does not expire. SafeWork NSW has no renewal requirement, and there is no expiry date printed on the card. Your White Card is valid for life in New South Wales and in every other Australian state and territory.
Some NSW employers — particularly on major commercial, government, and infrastructure projects — may ask workers with older White Cards to complete an internal refresher as a site-specific requirement. This is employer policy, not a SafeWork NSW regulation. The card remains legally valid.
Your Statement of Training is valid for site access for up to 60 days while your physical card is in transit. In NSW, you can also add your White Card details to the Service NSW app as a digital backup once your physical card arrives.

The White Card introduces the concept — but a lot of workers don't realise that on NSW construction sites, a SWMS is a legal document. If you're asked to sign one, you are legally acknowledging that you've read it and understand the safe work procedure. Signing something you haven't read is a problem. And if the task changes on the day — even slightly from what the SWMS describes — the document needs to be reviewed before you proceed. That is your legal right and your legal protection.”
“Something I specifically flag in NSW sessions is the role of the Health and Safety Representative — the HSR. NSW workplaces with five or more workers can elect an HSR who has specific legal powers: they can issue a Provisional Improvement Notice and direct workers to cease unsafe work. If you raise a safety concern with your supervisor and nothing happens, the HSR is your next escalation point before going to SafeWork NSW. On your first day on any NSW site, ask who the HSR is.”
