What Is a USI and How Do I Get One for My White Card?

A USI is a Unique Student Identifier — a free, permanent 10-character code that records every nationally recognised qualification you complete in Australia. You must have one before your White Card can be issued, and you can create it yourself in about two minutes at usi.gov.au with one form of ID.

What the USI actually does

The Unique Student Identifier is a national reference number that links every nationally recognised course you complete to one permanent record. It means your White Card training can be looked up years later even if the training provider closes, you change your name, or you lose every piece of paper you were given on the day.

Registered Training Organisations are legally prohibited from issuing a Statement of Attainment without a valid USI, which is why we ask for it at enrolment rather than on the morning of class.

How to create a USI in about two minutes

  1. Go to usi.gov.au and select “Create your USI”.
  2. Agree to the terms and confirm you are creating it for yourself.
  3. Choose one identity document — driver’s licence, Medicare card, Australian passport, birth certificate, citizenship certificate, ImmiCard, or visa with a foreign passport.
  4. Enter your name exactly as it appears on that document, plus your date of birth and contact details.
  5. Set your security questions and record the 10-character USI you are given.

Save the code in your phone contacts under “USI” and email it to yourself. You will need it for every ticket you ever do, not just your White Card.

Mistakes that cause problems on booking day

  • Name mismatches. “Mick” on the enrolment and “Michael” on the licence will fail verification. Use your legal name everywhere.
  • Missing middle names. If your Medicare card omits a middle name but your licence includes it, match the document you actually selected.
  • No USI at all. The single most common reason a student is held back from being issued on the day.
  • Duplicate USIs. Creating a second one splits your transcript. Retrieve the old one instead.
  • Typos in the date of birth. One wrong digit and the record will not verify against the government database.

What else to have ready

Alongside your USI, bring 100 points of original identification, a device with a working camera and microphone, and basic PPE for the practical demonstration. Everything you need for the day is listed on our NSW White Card course page. If the paperwork side makes you nervous, so does the assessment for a lot of first-timers — read what happens if you fail your White Card assessment. And keep your USI safe: it is the fastest route to replacing a lost card later on.

Frequently asked questions

Is a USI free?

Yes. Creating a Unique Student Identifier at usi.gov.au is free and takes about two minutes. Never pay a third party to create one for you.

Do I really need a USI for a White Card?

Yes. By law a Registered Training Organisation cannot issue a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment without a valid USI.

What ID can I use to create a USI?

One of: Australian driver’s licence, Medicare card, Australian passport, birth certificate, citizenship certificate, ImmiCard, or a visa with a foreign passport.

I already have a USI but can’t find it

Use the ‘Forgotten USI’ link at usi.gov.au and retrieve it with the ID you originally used. Do not create a second USI — duplicates split your training record.

My name doesn’t match my ID — what happens?

The USI will not verify. Your name must be entered exactly as it appears on the identity document, including middle names and hyphens.

Can you create the USI for me?

We can talk you through it on the phone on 1300 335 011, but you must create it yourself because it is tied to your identity documents.
